The goddess of war and conflict, Bellinger is the embodiment of both the warrior spirit and the tactics of combat. There are two aspects of Bellinger. The first is referred to as the path of the Warrior. Initiates and worshipers who follow this path follow Bellinger as a chaotic neutral deity. They are warriors in the truest sense, who seek only to perfect their skills in combat and to incite conflict where they go. They value the pure fury of battle. The second aspect of Bellinger is reffered to as the path of the Tactician. Initiates and worshippers who follow this path admire the art of warfare. they would much rater be a genderal commanding an army than a fighter in the front lines of combat. They follower her as a lawful neutral deity.
Clerics of Bellinger pry for their spells at dawn. The favored weapon of Bellinger is the Bastard Sword. Worshipers of Bellinger wear red to signify their faith. Her symbol is the flame to represent the fury that burns inside each of her initiates. She stands on the Wheel of Gods in opposition to Jaad, the god of peace and wisdom.
The Birth of the Paths: After being deceived by Ullon and causing the death of Faya, Bellinger became the subject of criticism from mortals and gods alike. He was perceived as being easily duped because of his lack of vision and foresight, and his brutish behavior was more trouble than it was worth. Bellinger improved his image a bit by sending his faithful against the forces of Chaos during the Battle of Light, but the damage done the year before was still great. Bellinger had to change.
As with the Artificians, the worshipers of Bellinger had two distinct ways of paying homage to their deity; waging war and fighting battles. Those who dedicated themselves to learning the strategy and tactics of warfare tried to take control of the church and displace the old style thugs and soldiers, but the loudest and most influential high priests seemed to be torn about which side of the god should be superior to the other. On one hand, the strategists were necessary to an effective and victorious campaign, but without the soldiers on the front lines, there was not army to lead. The argument was settle when the Paths solidified some time later; neither is superior. Bellinger in his newfound wisdom and foresight, determined that both the front and the back of the battlefield were important and would grant power and spells to those who would join either in his name. the Path of the tactician focused on the strategies and art of war, while the path of the Warrior mastered the art of fighting. Because of this new level of intellect ascribed to the god, the mortal concept of belinger gradually changed from his old, thug-like visage to an armed and armored woman. belling had become a goddess.
- Church Structure:* The church of Bellinger has also changed drastically. With the new stability in the church came a certain amount of trustworthiness. Nobles and merchants were able to speak to the tactician and give them goals and orders and the tacticians would set the warriors to accomplishing them. The bellinger church began dominating the military and it was difficult to find a chartered mercenary group without at least some connection to Bellinger. In the end, the nobles stopped trying to fight wars on their own, leaving it to the devotees of Bellinger. The two paths do work together, but the struggle for command sometimes gets in the way of pure cooperation. While the tacticians try to lead an organized unit, the warriors’ passion for combat drives them to fight the reckless abandon.
Through political maneuvering, the church of Bellinger eventually managed to get military ranks recognized as part of the noble hierarchy during times of war. On the battlefield, mercenary captains and military officers could order around knights and barons. generals and admirals rose to the level of the upper classes, as respected and feared as some Dukes. In the north, the King created the position of Minister of War to oversee all military operations and answers only to the crown. Every Minister of war has been an initiate of Bellinger. The southern Empire has a similar position they call the Grand General, but the military is kept tightly reined in by the nobility.
Church structure is very simple; Bellingerians have the same rank within the church that they have obtained in any legitimate military outfit. Among tactician high priests are chosen High Commanders, and among them is chosen the Supreme Commander to rule the church. Warrior High Priests combat each other for the title of Local Warlord, and every four years the Warlords fight for the title of Great Warlord.
